15 years passed since occupation of Azerbaijani Agdam region


15 years have passed since the occupation of Agdam region on July 23. A great part of Agdam region was occupied by the Armenian armed forces on July 23, 1993. 882 sq/km of Agdam out of 1094 sq/km, one town and 80 villages were occupied. As a result of the occupation, 128 thousand inhabitants were driven away from native lands. 17 thousand of them were old people.
As a result of the occupation, AZN 6.179 bln damage was caused to Agdam region of Azerbaijan. Only agriculture was damaged at AZN 992.8 mln. About 6 thousand people were killed during military operations in Agdam region. Increase in population is 10% at present. IDPs from Agdam were settled in 59 regions and 875 settlements of the republic.

Armenia occupied 20 percent of the Azerbaijan territory – Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts. The occupation started in 1988. Until December 1991, Azerbaijan lost control over Nagorno-Karabakh except for Shusha and Khojaly. But in 1992-93, Shusha, Khojaly and seven surrounding districts of Nagorno-Karabakh were occupied too. In 1994, the parties signed the ceasefire agreement and hold peace talks till today.

The OSCE Minsk Group was established within the OSCE in 1992 with participation of 10 countries in order to settle peacefully the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Representatives of three countries – the USA, Russia and France have been represented in the Minsk Group since 1997.
