Authoritative US newspaper ‘Washington Times’ wrote in its June 9 article that socio-economic situation in Armenia worsens day after day, AzerTag informs.
“More than one fourth part of the Armenian population lives poorly”, the article states. Average wages are very low in the country. Today, existence of Armenian state fully depends on foreign aid. Armenian Diaspora assists the country with millions of dollars; a greater part of the Armenian population live owing to the means sent by their relatives living abroad. According to calculations of the International Monetary Fund, the amount of money sent to the country from abroad exceeds the income derived by the local industry.
The newspaper writes that a large part of Yerevan city consists of old and out-of-date buildings. Cars of the Soviet period hasten the process of environmental pollution. Insufficiency of water supply is very high in some regions.
There are also serious problems with democracy in Armenia. These problems became apparent early this year once again. During the presidential elections the authorities used mass violence against opposition.
The article states that great majority of the population in Armenia has left the country. As a result of aggression against neighbouring Azerbaijan, Armenia isolated itself from large-scale economic projects ongoing in the region. By impeding solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Armenia aggravates the situation in the country still more. The new Armenian leadership should clearly understand this.
