The OSCE chairman-in-office, foreign minister of Finland, Alexander Stubb met with the co-chairs to the OSCE Minsk Group in Helsinki on June 9. Nagorno-Karabakh problem was discussed during the meeting, the OSCE press service informs.
The co-chairs to the OSCE Minsk Group informed A.Stubb about the results of the meeting held between the Presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Saint-Petersburg on June 6. Anjey Kaspshik, personal representative of the OSCE attended the meeting as well.
A.Stubb expressed his support to the co-chairs’ activity during the meeting.
“Solution of the conflict in the OSCE zone is the principal priority for Finland, chairing in the organization”. I call on Armenia and Azerbaijan to benefit from the co-chairs’ possibilities and seriously discuss the proposals over the conflict solution. There is no alternative to peaceful solution of the conflict”, he stated.
The conflict between the two countries of South Caucasia started in 1988 over territorial claims raised by Armenia against Azerbaijan. As a result, 20 percent of Azerbaijani territory – Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts are under Armenian occupation. In 1994, the parties signed the ceasefire agreement and since then, the co-chairs to the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the USA are holding unsuccessful peaceful negotiations.
