Russia plays positive role in the regulation of Armenian-Azerbaijan conflict – first deputy Foreign Minister of RFLast year, especially the end of the year was memorable with positive steps in the solution to the Armenian-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Andrey Denisov, the first deputy Foreign Minister of RF stated to Trend News in Moscow. According to him, Russia is equally interested in the friendly relations with both Azerbaijan and Armenia.

“Both countries are very close to us. Russia frankly and impartially tries to find a satisfying solution to this conflict, which is especially hard and painful for Azerbaijan”, Denisov stated.

The conflict between the two countries of South Caucasia started in 1988 over territorial claims raised by Armenia against Azerbaijan. Until December 1991, Azerbaijan lost control over Nagorno-Karabakh except for Shusha and Khojaly. But in 1992-93, Shusha, Khojaly and seven surrounding districts of Nagorno-Karabakh were occupied too. In 1994, the parties signed the ceasefire agreement and hold fruitless peace talks under the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the USA till today.
