Are internally displaced people going back to their lands? The reporter of the Committee on Refugees, Migration and Population of the Council of Europe valued the wish of internally displaced people to go back to their own lands as an “important issue”.
“The purpose of our visit is to get closely acquainted with the situation of refugees and internally displaced people from Nagorno-Karabakh and its surroundings. We seriously pay attention to 4 important issues. Firstly, it is a fact that refugees and internally displaced people from Nagorno-Karabakh and its surroundings have left their lands. Secondly, these citizens want to return to Nagorno-Karabakh. Thirdly, it is the issue of preparation measures and current opportunities. Fourthly, it is the control of migration issues” the reporter of the Committee on Refugees, Migration and Population of the Council of Europe John Grinvey replied to the questions of journalists, Lent.az informs. After meeting with internally displaced people the official of CEU came to a conclusion that refugees and internally displaced people from Nagorno-Karabakh and its surroundings wanted to return to their own lands and valued this as an “important issue” from the point of human rights.
“These people especially elderly people want to return to their own lands and live their. However, Azerbaijan government also understands very well that lots of work should be done for it. After Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is solved plenty of resources will be required to conduct infrastructural projects, create living conditions at those areas. Especially, the issue on mine clean-up on these lands should be put under strict control”.
The representative of CEU stated that if there is an opportunity for refugees and internally displaced people to return the realization of infrastructural projects, building of social objects and mine security will have to be planned beforehand. According to him, the Council of Europe is ready to give the needed support to Azerbaijan. International community also has to help connected with these issues.
