New outlines have appeared in the settlement of Armenian – Azerbaijan conflict. “Work is carried out over the uncoordinated Madrid proposals on the conflict settlement”, AR foreign minister, Elmar Mammadyarov stated on June 10 in Baku.
The conflict between the two countries of South Caucasia started in 1988 over territorial claims raised by Armenia against Azerbaijan. As a result, 20 percent of the Azerbaijan territory – Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts are under Armenian occupation. In 1994, the parties signed the ceasefire agreement and since then, the co-chairs to the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the USA are holding unsuccessful peaceful negotiations.
“These uncoordinated outlines are a matter of principle for us and we provided the OSCE Minsk Group mediators with the opportunity to work over these issues with Armenia”, the minister stated.
The minister, speaking about the last meeting held in Saint-Petersburg between the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan on June 6, stated that the meeting was of familiarization character. “We introduced our positions to each-other and decided to enable the co-chairs to find new approaches to gain progress in positions”, Mammadyarov stated.
