New possibilities arise in negotiations over Nagorno-Karabakh conflict
After the adoption of the UN resolution “About the situation in the occupied Azerbaijani territories”, new possibilities arose in the negotiations over Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the co-chairs to the OSCE Minsk Group, as well as other international organizations should accept them, Khazar Ibrahim, spokesman to the AR Foreign Ministry stated on June 9.
The UNO General Assembly adopted the resolution “About the situation in the occupied Azerbaijani territories” submitted by the Azerbaijani side. 39 countries voted for and 7 – against the resolution, 100 states, including the co-chairs to the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France and the USA abstained.
The document states that “armed conflict in AR Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding regions puts under threat the international peace and security” and expresses concern about its negative influence on humanitarian situation in South Caucasia.
The resolution emphasizes immediate and unconditional withdrawal of Armenian troops from all the occupied territories of Azerbaijan as a key aspect.
According to K.Ibrahim, Madrid proposals provide good prospects for the conflict solution as well.
He considers that after the meeting of the Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents held on June 6 in Saint-Petersburg, it will be possible to speak about any progress towards the conflict solution when the Minsk Group mediators pay their next visit to the region. The visit is scheduled to the end of June.
The conflict between the two countries of South Caucasia started in 1988 over territorial claims raised by Armenia against Azerbaijan. As a result, 20 percent of the Azerbaijan territory – Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts are now under Armenian occupation. In 1994, the parties signed the ceasefire agreement and since then, the co-chairs to the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the USA are holding unsuccessful peaceful negotiations.
