Azerbaijani and Turkish foreign ministers, Elmar Mammadyarov and Ali Babajan discussed by telephone the situation in Caucasia on September 10. The Turkish foreign minister informed his Azerbaijani counterpart about the Turkish President Abdullah Gul’s visit to Yerevan and the talks he had held with Armenian foreign minister, Edward Nalbandian, Trend News informs quoting Turkish MM.
Babajan confirmed once again Turkey’s support of Azerbaijan. The Turkish foreign minister emphasized that the discussions over this topic will be continued within the framework of the 63rd session of the UNO General Assembly to be held in New York in mid-September.
The Azerbaijani foreign minister approved the initiative of holding a meeting of Azerbaijani, Turkish and Armenian foreign ministers in New York.
The conflict between the two countries of South Caucasia started in 1988 over territorial claims raised by Armenia against Azerbaijan. Until December 1991, Azerbaijan lost control over Nagorno-Karabakh except for Shusha and Khojaly. But in 1992-93, Shusha, Khojaly and seven surrounding regions of Nagorno-Karabakh were occupied too. In 1994, the parties signed the ceasefire agreement and hold peace talks till today.
The co-chairs to the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the USA, are mediating for peaceful solution of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
