Gahraman Agayev: “We can lose mass grave found in Guba”

If immediate measures are not taken to protect mass grave in Guba, last year’s landslide can occur again, head of the Guba expedition of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), Gahraman Agayev stated.

According to him, the head of the Executive Power of Guba Region said they will start establishing of a museum in that territory soon. “Definite measures should be taken to establish a museum there. Otherwise our efforts will be in vain and next generation will not forgive us. This territory is the only found mass grave which unveiled the disgusting face of Armenians and confirmed the fact of their fascism. As a result of landslide, we lost one of the holes with human bones last year. We can lose another hole too if a museum is not established. Last year, ground waters froze over frosty air there and sudden warming caused the landslide. Meteorologists forecast harsh frost this year as well. If it is cold again and we do not prevent the ground waters, the same incident can occur and we will lose the grave. Immediate measures should be taken there”.

Agayev reminded that the ANAS Institute of Archeology and Ethnography completed researches in the Guba mass grave on September 7 and submitted the results to the local Executive Power. “The relative authorities led by the Executive Power should develop the work there. This issue isn’t of a little importance, it is an historical and political issue and the government agencies should approach it at a high level”.

G.Agayev stated that the grave is on the bank of the Gudyalchay River, in the slope, but a plot of land was given to local residents at the top of hill-side. “When a yard is watered, the grave is absorbed. This must be prevented first of all. I was informed that a channel is already being dug there. But the back of that channel should be concreted. The Executive Power is already engaged with this issue”.

Agayev will leave for Guba on Tuesday to inspect the situation there.

But MP from Guba, Vahid Ahmadov said the local Executive Power had done certain work there and they appealed to the government to allocate additional funds. He said he had been informed that the funds will be allocated from the 2009 budget.

First deputy head to the Guba Executive Power, Yusif Abidov said the territory had been seriously protected by the police. “The work has been stopped temporarily. The government is planning to build a large memorial complex there. Ground waters don’t flow into the area. The grave’s surface is protected with slates”.

To remind, 410 human skulls were found in the mass grave in Guba. Most of them belong to women and children.
