The USA regrets about the horrible deaths during the Khojaly events and states about the necessity to continue the work over peaceful and fair solution of the conflict, Ann Derse, the US Ambassador to Azerbaijan stated to Trend News.
The genocide in Azerbaijani Khojaly town was committed by Armenian troops on the night of February 25-26, 1992. As a result, 613 people, including 106 women and 83 children were killed, 1275 were taken captives, and the fate of 150 is still unknown. 487 got disabled.
“I can’t forget the moment of my meeting with the Khojaly tragedy victims during my first year of work in Azerbaijan”, Derse stated.
The US Ambassador stubbornly called on to continue the work over peaceful and fair solution of the Armenian-Azerbaijan conflict.
The conflict between the two countries of South Caucasia started in 1988 over territorial claims of Armenia against Azerbaijan. As a result, 20 percent of the Azerbaijan territory – Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts are under the occupation of Armenian armed forces. In 1994, the parties signed the ceasefire agreement and hold fruitless peace talks through the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the USA till today.
