Armenian militaries voluntarily yielding themselves prisoners to Azerbaijani side confessed that soldiers are tortured in the Armenian army, the chief to the press service of the AR Defense Ministry, Eldar Sabiroglu, stated to the Trend News on March 2.
The Armenian militaries were captured by Azerbaijani side in Evjiduzu territory of Agdam region on 28 February, at about 2 o’clock pm. They approached the house of internally displaced from Khojaly, Zumrud Aliyeva and asked her for some bread in Russian.
Aliyeva heard them speak in Armenian among themselves and informed the military of the nearest unit. The Armenians were detained. Their names are Grant Markosian, Arthur Vartevian and Alik Tevosian.
According to Sabiroglu, the Armenian militaries stated during the questioning that the situation in the Armenian army is unbearable, soldiers aren’t given clothes, shoes, barracks aren’t heated and they catch different illnesses.
“The captives stated they weren’t even given food. Pneumonia and other serious illnesses are spread in the army and there is shortage of medicines. Death cases increase over the spread of infectious diseases. Armenian officers misappropriate the money sent by parents for medicines”, Sabiroglu added.
According to the chief of the press service, such a situation in the army force soldiers either to become a deserter or to be captured. The last fact is logical sequel of such a situation.
The conflict between the two countries of South Caucasia started in 1988 over the territorial claims raised by Armenia against Azerbaijan. Until December 1991, Azerbaijan lost control over Nagorno-Karabakh except for Shusha and Khojaly. But in 1992-93 Shusha, Khojaly and seven surrounding regions of Nagorno-Karabakh were occupied too. In 1994 the parties signed the ceasefire agreement and hold fruitless peace talks under the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the USA till today.
