Azerbaijan will not allow the current situation on the Nagorno-Karabakh to continue, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said at the event on the 90th anniversary of the Azerbaijani diplomacy.
“The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict must be resolved on terms of restoration of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and withdrawal of all Armenian forces from the occupied territories,” Mammadyarov said.
The foreign minister said the country is making all efforts for a peaceful solution of this conflict. “We are moving, albeit slowly, and we must move forward step by step,” he said.
Azerbaijan will not maintain the status quo in the conflict, Mammadyarov said.
“Let the Armenian side be confident that Baku will not allow preserving the current situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh in future,” the minister said.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. – are currently holding the peace negotiations.
