It is still unknown when the sides will be provided the updated Madrid principles, Russian co-chairman of the OSCE Minsk Group Yuri Merzlyakov told Trend News by telephone from Moscow.
“Updated Madrid principles were prepared already after a meeting in Krakow, but after each new meeting at high level, we were forced to make changes to the Madrid document, so it is unknown when the updated Madrid document will be submitted to the sides,” said Merzlyakov.
According to him, the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairmen specify the date of the next visit to the region.
The next visit of the OSCE Minsk Group to the region will take place next week, said the Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan lost all of Nagorno-Karabakh except for Shusha and Khojali in December 1991. In 1992-93, Armenian armed forces occupied Shusha, Khojali and 7 districts surrounding Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. – are currently holding the peace negotiations.
