PACE co-rapporteurs urge Russia to fully fulfill its commitments, co-rapporteur Boris Tsilevich said in Tbilisi on Thursday. “PACE position on this issue has not changed and this organization calls for implementing the resolutions on the withdrawal of Russian troops from Georgia,” he said. Tsilevich expressed regret over construction of a barbed wire fence along the line of contact in the territory of Georgia’s separatist regions, stressing that this is not Russia’s only violation.
Large scale military action was launched in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.
Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow and has called the two unrecognized republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories./Trend/
