Some 180 kilometers long section of the Azerbaijani-Georgian border hasn’t been fully agreed yet, chairman of the State Committee for Land and Cartography Garib Mammadov told journalists on Feb.12.
The length of the Azerbaijani-Georgian border is 480 kilometers, some 300 kilometers of which have already been agreed, according to the committee chairman.
“Our specialists have been to Georgia two times and determined the territories on which no agreement has been reached. Georgian specialists have also been to Azerbaijan. We will visit Georgia when the commission invites us through diplomatic channels,” Mammadov said.
Georgia borders with seven districts of Azerbaijan – Gazakh, Agstafa, Tovuz, Samukh, Gakh, Balaken and Zagatala – in the length of 480 kilometers. The parties have agreed on over 60 percent of the state border line.
The unresolved issue of the delimitation and demarcation of the Georgian-Azerbaijani border affects the fate of one of the attractions of the South Caucasus – David Gareji monastery complex. The complex of cave monasteries, David Gareji is located in 60 kilometers south-east of Tbilisi. Lavra of Saint David, which is located on the northern slope of the mountain that separates Georgia and Azerbaijan, is considered to be the main monastery.
