Armenia undertakes obligation within Riga declaration to settle Karabakh conflict in accordance with int’l law (UPDATE)

In accordance with the final declaration of the Riga summit, Armenia has undertaken an obligation on settling the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in accordance with the international law, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hikmet Hajiyev said May 23.

He was commenting on the remarks made by Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan during the Eastern Partnership summit in Riga.

“The third paragraph of the Riga declaration reflects the obligation on supporting the territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty of all partner countries,” he said. “In accordance with the fifth paragraph of the Riga declaration, the Armenian leadership undertakes an obligation on resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict based on the norms and principles of the international law,” he said.

Hajiyev noted that the unfounded statements made by Armenia, the country which is engaged in the historical, political and legal falsification about that allegedly Nagorno-Karabakh is not an integral part of Azerbaijan, once again proves the aggression committed by Armenia against Azerbaijan.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
