EU needs to demonstrate resolute attitude toward Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict – FM

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister met with his Latvian counterpart Edgars Rinkēvičs on April 15 as part of his visit to Latvia.

 

The parties expressed satisfaction with political dialogue and the development of cooperation between Azerbaijan and Latvia, the Azerbaijani foreign ministry told APA.

 

Elmar Mammadyarov in turn congratulated his counterpart on the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, expressing hope that Latvia will successfully completed its presidency.

 

Noting that Azerbaijan and the EU have a strategic partnership in the energy field, the minister stressed the importance of developing the strategic partnership in other areas. Furthermore, he added that the relations with the EU have to be mutually beneficial.

 

Giving an outline of the negotiations on the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Elmar Mammadyarov stressed the EU needs to show a resolute attitude toward the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, as on other conflicts.

 

Minister Mammadyarov also added that for the settlement of the conflict Armenia must first to pull back its occupying forces from the occupied Azerbaijani territories, as demanded in the UN Security Council’s resolutions.

  

Rinkēvičs said in turn that Latvia supports a peaceful resolution to the Nagorno-Karabakhconflict based on the norms of international law, especially the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty.

 

The FM also added that there are favorable conditions for the development of economic-trade relations between the two countries and Latvia is interested to attract Azerbaijani investment into the country.

 

In addition, the sides exchanged views on regional and international issues of common interest.
