“Azerbaijani and Russian presidents made remarkable statements on the settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
There is an agreement to hold OSCE Minsk Group meeting in Moscow in near future. It shows that Moscow saves its role of mediator and arbiter in the negotiation process and continues to play this role. It is positive case from the view of protection of Russian influence in the Caucasus. The main goal of this peacemaking mediation mission is not to solve the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, but is prevention of escalation of the conflict, which was more real a year ago”, President of National Strategy Institute of Russia, political analyst Mikhail Remizov told APA correspondent in Moscow.
He said position of the powerful states on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was important, but not crucial. “Undoubtedly the parts of conflict have a crucial role in the settlement of the conflict. The United States and Russia couldn’t have univocal and similar in details positions because there is Armenia in any case, there is Nagorno-Karabakh, which has good defense line and doesn’t change its position and there is Azerbaijan, which is also not changing its position and insisting in restoration of its territorial integrity”.
Remizov thinks that the US and Russia are not able to put pressure upon any side to solve the conflict. “They are not ready and not able to do that because everything depends on the ability of the parts of conflict to pass decision now and in future”.
The expert thinks that Russian president achieved his goal during the visit to Baku. “He aims to compensate Moscow’s failures in gas rows and Central Asian gas geopolitics. Azerbaijan is an important link from this point of view and Moscow tries to win Azerbaijan’s support to compensate its losses in the gas geopolitics and problem of reducing gas production in its territory. The gas deal with Azerbaijan is so useful for Kremlin that “Gazprom” didn’t avoid to offer maximum price acceptable for the producer”.
