The sides of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict agree on the need to hold a meeting at the highest level, OSCE Minsk Group co-chair from the Unites States, Ian Kelly’s Office told Trend on Wednesday. “The sides agree on the need for a meeting at the highest level, and the co-chairs will continue working with the foreign ministers to prepare for such a meeting,” he said.
Earlier, during their recent visit to the region the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs stressed the need for a meeting of the Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding regions of Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four resolutions on the liberation of the occupied territories.
