Armenian armed forces violate ceasefire over 20 times in past 24 hours

Over the past 24 hours, the Armenian armed forces violated ceasefire 21 times in different directions of the contact line between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, the Defense Ministry of Azerbaijan said Oct. 14.

Armenian soldiers stationed in the villages of Chinari and Aygepar of Armenia’s Berd district opened fire at the Azerbaijani armed forces located in the villages of Kokhanebi and Alibayli of Tovuz district.

Azerbaijani soldiers’ positions also came under fire from the Armenians’ positions near the villages of Shikhlar and Shuraabad of Aghdam district, the villages of Horadiz and Ashagi Veyselli of Fizuli district, the Tapgaragoyunlu village of Goranboy district and the nameless heights in the Hojavand district.

The violation was silenced with return fire.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four U.N. Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
