Azerbaijan hands over body of Armenian citizen to opposing side

Azerbaijan handed over the body of Karen Petrosyan to the Armenian side on Oct.10, State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons of Azerbaijan told Trend.

Petrosyan, a member of Armenian sabotage group, was detained in the Azerbaijani territory on Aug.7, 2014. He suddenly died the next day in detention.

“Respecting the international humanitarian law, Azerbaijan handed over the body to the Armenian side,” the state commission said.

The handover took place in the village of Bala Jafarli of Azerbaijan’s Gazakh district.

The process facilitated by the State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons of Azerbaijan and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), took place without any incidents.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
