An operational investigative group composed of employees of Azerbaijani Prosecutor General’s Office and Interior Ministry departed for Moscow to interrogate Russian businessman German Sterligov, the law enforcement bodies said Sept. 1 in a joint message.
Sterligov, who in summer moved with his family to the Armenia-occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, was declared internationally wanted by Azerbaijani Prosecutor General’s Office on July 28.
The businessman is being charged under the Article 281.2 (open calls against the state) and the Article 318.2 (illegal crossing of the state border of the Republic of Azerbaijan).
Sterligov was on Aug. 31 detained in Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport, Russian news agency Interfax said earlier citing the businessman’s lawyer.
The lawyer added that the detention was carried out by transport police officers at Domodedovo.
Sterligov’s lawyer also said he supposes that the detention was related to Azerbaijan’s declaring Sterligov internationally wanted.
After midnight, Sterligov was temporarily released under condition of not leaving Russia.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council’s four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
