Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Hikmat Hajiyev has commented on Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan’s statements during a press conference in Moscow.
Hikmat Hajiyev reminded Nalbandyan that the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs’ position on the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, as stated in the Budapest document dated 1995 on the co-chairs’ mandate, relies on international law, the Charter of the United Nations, the Helsinki Final Act and the UN Security Council resolutions, which call for an unconditional, immediate and complete withdrawal of Armenian troops from Azerbaijani territories, the Foreign Ministry told APA on April 8.
If Nalbandian claims that Armenia’s position on resolution of the conflict complies with the positions of the international community and OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, then Armenia should withdraw its occupying forces from the Azerbaijani territories and start working on the Great Peace Agreement, Hajiyev added.
“The question is that why does Armenia refuse to start working on the Great Peace Agreement and ignores the calls from the OSCE MG co-chairs? With this statement, the Armenian FM once again proves the policy conducted by the country’s leadership in the negotiation process is based on lies and speculation. Therefore, mechanisms of pushing Armenia toward peace, as well as the imposition of sanctions are needed to be seriously considered with respect to this country that is deliberately violating the negotiation process and maintaining the status quo through occupation and aggression against Azerbaijan,” the spokesman underlined.
