Azerbaijani President: “UN resolutions must be base for the settlement of the conflict “

ask why it was necessary to commit provocation after positive talks in Paris.

Moscow.Farid Akbarov-APA. “Unfortunately, we can not talk about the success of the negotiations on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The reason is quite simple, Armenia does not want peace. They want to keep the status quo, want to leave everything as it is, APA’s Moscow bureau reports quoting “Russia 24” TV’s interview with President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

The President said that the presidents of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chair countries have repeatedly stated that the status quo is not acceptable: “Status quo should be changed. Changing the status quo, means the liberation of the territory, which is the key condition of the settlement process. “

Azerbaijani President noted that the conflict differs from other conflicts in the post-soviet countries. “The difference is that there are UN resolutions on the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. There is not only one resolution, but 4. These resolutions read about immediate and unconditional withdrawal of Armenian forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. But these resolutions are not implemented over 20 years. Unfortunately there is no mechanism to ensure implementation of these resolutions. Armenia just ignores them. These resolutions must be base for the settlement of the conflict. Because, there is no other way.

President Ilham Aliyev noted that negotiations were intensified in comparison with previous years, “Co-chair countries, as well as presidents actively participated in the negotiation process. It was not like this up to now. In August there was a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. A similar meeting was held in September with the participation of US Secretary of State John Kerry. In October, at the invitation of French President Francois Hollande, bilateral and trilateral talks were held in Paris. One of the subjects in the negotiation process was to strengthen mutual trust. Both sides appreciated the Paris meeting as positive. But two weeks later, Armenia started military exercises in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. Not in Armenia, not even in the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region, but on the frontline in the territory of Agdam region of Azerbaijan. They involved 47,000 troops and more than a thousand pieces of military equipment. The question is why it was necessary to commit provocation after positive talks in Paris.”

Azerbaijani President also touched upon the activities of international organizations: “What is happening in the world today speaks of incapability of international institutions; they do not justify hope, entrusted to them. This also relates to our situation. For 20 years, OSCE leads the mediation on the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. This question refers also to the competence of the UN. In fact, in today’s world there is a deformation of international institutions, which is very dangerous and disturbing situation. I think that the leading countries should clearly define their positions. And not only at the level of statements, but respecting the taken decisions.”
