Hungary’s principles remain unchanged: the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan should be guaranteed, Peter Szijjarto, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary told Trend on the eve of his visit to Baku.
He will visit Azerbaijan on Nov.3-4.
The minister said it is also crucial to guarantee the protection of rights of national minorities and ethnic groups.
Answering the question about Hungary’s position towards continued violation of rights of the Azerbaijani refugees and IDPs as a result of occupation of the Azerbaijani territories, Szijjarto said Hungary supports the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group
“All conflicts have to be solved through negotiations,” he added.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
