“The relations between Azerbaijan and the US are based on fruitful cooperation. The current strong relations between our countries have historical past,” said Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov addressing the “Azerbaijan-US: Vision of the future” forum in Baku, APA reports. The minister said that an independent Azerbaijan has shown an example to the world community as the first Muslim democracy. He noted the US supports Azerbaijan in the establishment of democratic society and settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. Mammadyarov stated that though the Nagorno Karabakh conflict that ignited 20 years ago created a problem for the development of the country’s economy, currently Azerbaijan is the leader of the region: “At present, the economy of Azerbaijan accounts for more than 80% of the region’s economy.”
Elmar Mammadyarov said Azerbaijan and US are cooperating both in bilateral and multilateral format.
“Azerbaijan gives full support for the international community’s struggle against terrorism. We have participated in the peacekeeping operations and taken a number of steps. Azerbaijan shares the values of the Euro-Atlantic society,” he said.
Minister underlined that the major problem of Azerbaijan is to solve Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
“The solution of this conflict is very important. Armenia’s non-constructive position causes damage not only to Azerbaijan, but also to the Armenian people. The solution of the conflict will bring stability to the entire region,” he said.
Elmar Mammadyarov once more underlined the necessity of withdrawal of the Armenian army from the occupied Azerbaijani territories.
