The international community intends to assist to solve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the nearest term, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said today.
“We approve the updated version of the Madrid principles. They give an opportunity for broad discussion of the question. But the Armenian side claims that there are points which are necessary to coordinate”, minister told media.
Minister said that the last visit to the region of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly special representative on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict Goran Lennmarker and the OSCE PA President Joao Soares testifies that the international community intends to assist to solve this conflict as soon as possible.
“The documents have been already prepared both at the level of co-chairmen, and OSCE new chairman – Kazakhstan. There is the only question for Armenia to agree all this,” minister said.
The world community has stated that the Azerbaijani lands must be liberated and refugees must return home, he said.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994.
The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. – are currently holding the peace negotiations.
