There are no political prisoners in Azerbaijan and the discussions held at the PACE have also confirmed it, said the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev at the press conference in Brussels, APA reports.
According to him, broad discussions were held at the PACE in January, 2013 and the resolution, which had been submitted by the supporters of the opinion that there are political prisoners in Azerbaijan, failed: “The great majority at the assembly have not joined the anti-Azerbaijan campaign. This means that there are no political prisoners in Azerbaijan and this has been confirmed by one of the main institutions of Europe and the world”.
President mentioned that Azerbaijan has been a member of the Council of Europe, as well as European Court of Human Rights for 10 years: “If somebody has faced injustice, that person can appeal to the European Court of Human Rights”.
President Ilham Aliyev stressed that the notion of political prisoner has no specific definition: “If there is official definition, for example, if the PACE admits it, then it will be easy to determine who is a political prisoner”.
