Slovenia does not recognize “parliamentary election ” in Nagorno-Karabakh

Slovenia also reiterates that that these procedures cannot prejudice the determination of the future status of Nagorno-Karabakh or impact the negotiation process, said the message.
Slovenian Foreign Ministry strongly supports the work of the OSCE Minsk Group and the efforts of its co-chairs to overcome the status quo and to progress in the negotiations, according to the message.

In view of reports about “parliamentary election” in Nagorno-Karabakh on May 3, Slovenia reiterates that it does not recognize the legal framework within which the mentioned so-called election was held, the message of Slovenian Foreign Ministry said May 6.

“Parliamentary election” was held May 3 in the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, occupied by Armenia.

Earlier, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry called the election illegal.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council’s four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
