ISESCO condemns Armenian destruction of Azerbaijani historical monuments  The ISESCO condemns Armenian destruction of historical monuments in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, ISESCO Director General, Abdulaziz Bin Osman Al Twaijri told journalists on Februay 19 in Baku.

As a result of Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan, great number of Azerbaijani historical and cultural monuments has been destroyed, including 464 historical monuments, over 40.000 artworks and 4.6 million books.

The conflict between the two countries of South Caucasia started in 1988 over territorial claims of Armenia against Azerbaijan. 20 percent of the Azerbaijan territory – Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts are under the occupation of Armenian armed forces. In 1994, the parties signed the ceasefire agreement and hold fruitless peace talks through the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the USA until today.

“I call on to liberate immediately the occupied Azerbaijani territories” Al-Twaijri emphasized.
The ISESCO Director General came to Baku to participate at the events devoted to proclaiming Baku the capital of Islam World in 2009.

The decision was made in November 2007 at the V conference of the ministers of culture of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) member-states in Tripoli.
Over 100 national and international events are to be held within the Year of Islam Culture in Baku.
The logotype and the flag of the current conference were designed by an Azerbaijani artist and designer. Inseparable parts of Azerbaijani culture and one of the noteworthy symbols of the country – the Azerbaijani carpet and the Maiden’s Tower were depicted in the logotype.
