Armenia dissatisfied with Russian President’s statement in Azerbaijan on settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict

“Moscow Declaration exactly covers the principles of the settlement of Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh conflict: everybody is aware of the principles of the international law, under the present circumstances, we base on the decisions of the international organizations, of course, the decision of the most influential international organization – United Nations Organization,” Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said at the press conference after meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in Baku, APA reports.

The head of state noted that the UN Security Council had adopted four resolutions demanding unconditional withdrawal of Armenian armed forces from the occupied Azerbaijani territories and said other international organizations, as well as OSCE had passed related decisions.
“The decision of OSCE Lisbon summit is still effective. Of course, the conflict should be settled basing on these principles. The principle of territorial integrity is inviolable. As regards the peoples’ self-determination, it can be realized within Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity,” he said.

Ilham Aliyev said the process of negotiations had reached the final stage.
“The next round of the negotiations held in St. Petersburg this month has been efficient enough. We could make some more steps forward. Of course, there are great expectations in Azerbaijan, very likely in Armenia and the world that the conflict will be solved as soon as possible. We are moving forward. It brings optimism and strengthens the process of negotiations. Though the conflict has not been solved since the ceasefire decision was passed in 1994, compared with the previous years, now there are more hopes for the solution of the conflict. Therefore I consider that the conflict can be solved within the constructive cooperation, understanding and interests of all parties. We want this, strive for this and are doing our best to achieve it,” the president said.

Russian President Medvedev also said that he agreed with the idea that such problems could be solved only on the International legal basis. “This basis is known. The question is about the common principles of the international law elaborated by the civil peoples and of course, decisions and resolutions adopted on Nagorno Karabakh conflict by the leading international organizations, particularly the United Nations. In my opinion, it is not cause that these principles exist – no one reject those principles, the question is that the sides must be ready to review all issues in this context and to settle the conflict on the basic principles not thinking about other points. It encourages us to look forward for a chance to solve the complicated and enough long conflict. The last meeting in St Petersburg showed that Azerbaijan and Armenia are ready to solve discords on various issues and to make progress. There are all opportunities to solve the conflict in near future and Russia will work together with other countries to reach maximum useful solution to the conflict”.

Medvedev’s speech made Armenians anxious. Even some newspapers said that Medvedev considered Armenia as an aggressor.
