List of military equipment, exported by Azerbaijan within 7 years, published


“Moscow Defense Brief” journal of Russia published the list of military equipment bought by Azerbaijan abroad in 2000-2007.

According to the document signed between Russia and Azerbaijan last year, our country will buy several BTR-90S and 70 BTR-80A produced in Arzamas machine-building plant in 2008, APA reports.
“The document regarding the status of Gabala RLS, signed in 2002, reflected the clauses about the aid rendered by Russia for modernization of the Azerbaijan Air Force and protection from air attacks, as well as education of Azerbaijani military in Russia and assistance in the maintenance of military equipment. Turkey’s aid to Azerbaijan made USD 170 mln in 2005. Azerbaijan receives shooting weapons and other modern means from the US and Israeli companies as well. Besides, Azerbaijan plans to buy new aircrafts for its Air Force. Azerbaijan signed the agreement with Ukraine in 2005 on purchasing 12 MiQ-29 fighting aircrafts, 2 MiQ-29UB aircrafts and 12 L-39 training aircrafts. Azerbaijan bought one Su-25 fighter (probably from the Czech Republic) and one Su-27UB (from Georgia). The agreement was also reached about purchasing one Su-27 aircraft and Su-25 fighters from Ukraine. At the same time, Azerbaijan’s Mi-24 stab helicopters will be modernized by the South African company “South African ATE Company’s Super Hind Mk-III Program” functioning in Ukraine. The journal underlines that Azerbaijan intends to buy FC-1 light fighters from China. The list of weapons and military equipment was published in the article too. According to the list, Azerbaijan bought 106 T-72 tanks in 2002-2006. 45 of them were bought from Ukraine (2004-2006), 60 from Belarus (2005-2006) and one from Slovakia (2002). Azerbaijan bought 2 BMP-1 armored personnel vehicles from Ukraine in 2005,
3 BTR-3U armored transport vehicles in 2006, 36 M-46 130-mm towed cannons from Ukraine in 2002, 72 MT-12 100-mm antitank cannons from Bulgaria in 2002, 12 pieces of 9RK58 Smerch Drum-Fire Reactive System from Ukraine in 2004 – 2005, 85 PM-38 grenade launchers from Ukraine in 2005 – 2006, 12 MiG-29 fighters from Ukraine in 2006 – 2007, 2 MiG-29UB combat trainers from Ukraine in 2006, 12 Su-25 from Georgia in 2002 – 2005, Su-25UB combat trainer assault plane from Georgia in 2005, 12 L-39 trainers from Ukraine in 2006, AB-25 patrol boat from Turkey in 2000, Point patrol boat from the USA in 2003, 2 small patrol boats from the USA in 2001 and 30 small patrol boats from Turkey in 2001 – 2005”.
