Peace in region impossible without resolution of Nagorno-KarabakhEstablishment of peace and security in the region is impossible without the resolution of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov stated in a meeting with his Lebanese counterpart Fawzi Salloukh in New York within the framework of the 64th UN General Assembly, the ministry announced.
The ministers discussed common interests and viewpoints of Azerbaijan and Lebanon on different problems in the Middle East and South Caucasus.
Mammadyarov informed his Lebanese counterpart the country’s position on the solution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and said peace and security in the region is impossible without the resolution of this dispute.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.
Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in May, 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. – are currently holding the peace negotiations
