The European Union estimates positively continuation of talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia over solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and supports them. “We are pleased at the continuation of talks after recess”, Peter Semneby, special envoy of the European Union on South Caucasia stated at the press conference devoted to the results of his visit to Azerbaijan on July 1.
Reference of Trend News: Armenia occupied 20 percent of the Azerbaijan territory – Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts. The occupation started in 1988. Until December 1991, Azerbaijan lost control over Nagorno-Karabakh except for Shusha and Khojaly. But in 1992-93, Shusha, Khojaly and seven surrounding districts of Nagorno-Karabakh were occupied too. In 1994, the parties signed the ceasefire agreement and hold peace talks till today.
The co-chairs to the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the USA, mediate for peaceful solution of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
The special envoy emphasized that the European Union supports the activity of the OSCE Minsk Group.
Semneby stated the parties try to reach an agreement which will let proceed with talks and take definite steps. “Perhaps this agreement won’t settle the conflict completely, but it can become an advancement in the settlement process”, he said.
