Azerbaijani, Armenian and Russian Presidents sign declaration on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

Azerbaijani President, Ilham Aliyev, Armenian President, Serj Sarkisian and Russian President, Dmitry Medvedyev signed a joint declaration on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict after the meeting held in trilateral format in the Russian President’s residence near Moscow – “Mayn Dorf” castle on Novmber 2, AzerTAg informs.

Russian President, Dmitry Medvedyev stated after reading out the declaration to the journalists: “We have discussed comprehensively and in detail the situation and prospects of solution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict via political means and via continuing a direct dialogue between Azerbaijan and Armenia mediated by Russia, the USA and France as the Co-Chairs to the OSCE Minsk Group”.

The Presidents “declare that they will contribute to improving the situation in South Caucasia and ensuring stability and security in the region by settling the conflict on the basis of the principles and norms of the international law, as well as the resolutions and documents adopted within this framework. This will create favorable condition for economic development and closer cooperation in the region”.

Presidents, Ilham Aliyev, Serj Sarkisian and Dmitry Medvedev “admit the importance of continuing the highest mediatory efforts by the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs, taking into account their meeting with the parties in Madrid in November 2007 and the following discussions in order to develop the basic principles of the political solution”. Leaders of three countries agreed that “a peaceful settlement must be accompanied by legally binding international guarantees of all its aspects and stages”.

The Declaration says that the Presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia “have agreed to continue the work over settling the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict by the political way, as well as came to an agreement to continue high-level contacts and have instructed their foreign ministers to intensify further steps in the talks process with the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs.
The final paragraph says that the Presidents “consider it important to encourage creation of conditions for realizing measures to strengthen confidence in the context of settlement efforts”. The document was signed with the participation of the Co-Chairs to the OSCE Minsk Group.
