Passage of the draft resolution on the so-called Armenian genocide would be madness

Passage of the draft resolution on the so-called Armenian genocide would be madness “If it happens, Turkey may prepare a new roadmap in its foreign policy”.

“Azerbaijan should avail of its impact on US Administration in this issue”. “The passage of the draft resolution in the Committee on Foreign Affairs would be madness. If they want to lose Turkey, this resolution will be passed. After that it will be clear on what level Turkey will continue its relations with the US,” former chairman of Turkish Historical Society, professor of Gazi University Yusuf Halacoglu told APA’s Turkey bureau. He considers that if the draft resolution is passed, Turkish government will not escape public pressure, large-scale campaign against the US will begin in the country again.
“It may also result in the collapse of the government. If in this case the government does not impose necessary sanction against the US, after the change of the government there will be squaring of accounts. Therefore, I suppose the US will take it into consideration. But if the US is captured by its feelings, there will be a turning point and after the turning point Turkey may prepare a new roadmap in its foreign policy,” he said.

The department chair at Istanbul Kultur University, Professor Mensur Akgun does not consider that if the resolution is passed there will be the continuation. He also sent message to Azerbaijan: “If our Azerbaijani brothers stand by us in this issue, I don’t think the draft resolution will not be passed at the committee. Azerbaijan should avail of its impact on US Administration and act together with Turkey in this matter. We expect the support of our Azerbaijani brothers. Nothing will change even if this draft resolution is passed”.

According to Director of the European Centre of Research in Bahçesehir University, Doctor of Political Sciences Cengiz Aktar, the draft resolution will be passed, but no steps will be taken afterwards: “if we take glance at Azerbaijani and Turkish media, we will see that the draft resolution will not be passed. But I think that it will be passed this time. It’s important for Azerbaijani officials to warn the US. The draft resolution may be passed at the committee, but it will not be passed at the Congress. The US administration doesn’t want the passage of the draft resolution, because they have other problems – Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Taking these into consideration, Azerbaijan, Armenia, “genocide” issues are not important at all for the United States. However, passage of the draft resolution may negatively impact on Turkey-US relations”.

Note that the draft resolution will be laid on the tapis at the committee on March 4.
